History of Wagyu

Cattle were raised as domestic livestock made their way to the Japanese mainland in approximately 400 B.C. For religious reasons, cattle were used to till the earth as opposed to being harvested for their meat. However, eating meat became commonplace in Japan in the beginning of the Meiji Era (1868), and selective breeding became popular. To make high quality meat became their pride, and the stable supply of Wagyu was established across the country.
